What Are Submersible Pumps? How Do They Work?

Updated: Nov 29, 2022

Submersible Pumps

Submersible water pumps are advancing rapidly, especially in India. In the olden days, installing a submersible pump cost more than thousands and were seen rarely. But with the latest advancements, we can see these pumps installed everywhere in residential areas and corporate buildings.

These pumps are more useful in areas where there is water scarcity, and the only source of water is from the ground. A submersible water pump will help you fulfill all the requirements for reaching the groundwater level.

There are many companies that provide a wide range of these pumps. But first, you need to understand what a submersible pump is, its advantages and disadvantages, along with the submersible pump price and working.

What is a submersible pump?

The submersible water pumps are used to pump out water from either the rivers or from within the land. These pumps should be fully immersed inside the water. Additionally, they have a hermetically sealed motor that is close-coupled to the water pump's body.

These are highly efficient water pumps. The fact that these pumps are completely immersed inside the water only adds to the efficiency because they do not have to exert extra pressure using power to let the water flow into the pipe. The water pressure makes the water enter the pipe itself.

The first water pump was installed in 1928 by Armais Arutunoff in an oil field. He is an oil delivery system engineer. Later in 1929, Pleuger Pumps discovered the design for submersible turbine pumps.

How does the submersible pump work?

In recent times, the submersible water pumps have gained good market shares in industrial and domestic sectors because of their high reliability and versatility. They are highly efficient as they do not need any priming and are not prone to cavitation's. The submersible pump is a variety of centrifugal pumps. The impellers in the pump will throw the water outwards.

These impellers are backward curved structures that are connected to a single shaft. This shaft uses an induction motor to run. The water enters the impellers through their eyes. Then, this water is thrown out radically due to the centrifugal phenomenon.

In this way, the water particles will gain pressure along with kinetic energy. Later, this water outlet needs to be passed to the next impeller efficiently. For this passing purpose, a stationary device called the diffuser is used.

The water passing from the impellers to the diffuser can now be seen. The purpose of diffuser is to deflect the inlet water and make it ready to pass through the next impeller stage. The outlet of this diffuser is connected to the next impeller.

At each stage with the series of impellers, the pressure gain is multiplied. This multiplication is the reason why submerged pumps produce high-pressure heads. Later, the water passes through the inbuilt non-slam check valve to reduce the pressure effectively. With the pressure rectified, the high-altitude pumping issue is solved.

An induction motor is used to keep the impellers running while focusing on the prime mover of a submersible water pump. The power supply for this meter is transmitted through the stator, which can be either single-phase or three-phase. The motor generates high heat during the operation. For this purpose, it is either filled with water or oil, which acts as a coolant.

Advantages and disadvantages

The following are some of the advantages and disadvantages of submersible pumps.

Advantages:
  • Design: These submersible pumps are designed in such a way that they do not leak. The design ensures that the pump will not shorten electricity even when immersed inside water.

  • No priming required: Unlike other types of pumps, these submersible pumps, which are centrifugal pumps, do not require any priming before starting up.

  • Coverless distances: These pumps take up less space and distance than any other pump. The reason for this is because these pumps do not require exerting any extra pressure to get the water out. They simply use direct pressure through the hose.

  • Place inside the water: Not many pumps can withstand the water pressure when immersed inside the water. Submersible pumps will work underwater efficiently without any trouble.

Disadvantages:
  • Break-in Gasket: One of the main problems with submersible pumps is that their gasket may loosen up or even, in some worst cases, break. This damage to the basket will result in leakage, and your pump might fail eventually.

  • Hard to find issues: Since these pipes are submerged inside the water, you cannot find the problem easily even if there is any. You will need to call a professional to diagnose the issue. The time to get the issue fixed is also long due to the complex structure.

  • Submersible pump price: Another disadvantage is the price of submersible pump. The costs of these pumps are still going down gradually these days, yet, if you damage your pipe in the early stages, you lose a lot of investment.

Uses of submersible pumps

There are many uses for these pipes. Some of them are explained below.

  • Irrigation: The major use of submersible pumps is in the irrigation sector. These pumps are useful in land irrigation as they can cover acres of land. You can even opt for these pipes if the water supply is through lakes, rivers, or borewell, as these pipes work from underwater.

  • Pumping from wells: To pump out water from wells, submersible water pumps are widely used! They work efficiently in pumping out water from deeper depths without wasting any power or resources.

  • Water drainage: You can opt for these pumps if there is a need to pump out water from any unwanted lang quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, these pumps are also used in pumping sewage, oil industry, industrial pumping, and deep drilling of borehole pumping.

Thank you for the informative post on submersible pumps! I appreciate the detailed explanation of how they work and their various applications. It's interesting to see how these pumps can be especially beneficial in septic systems, where they help manage wastewater efficiently. Your insights on the advantages over traditional pumps, like their ability to handle higher volumes and operate quietly underwater, really highlight their importance.

I’m curious, what considerations should one keep in mind when selecting a submersible pump for a residential septic system? Are there specific features or capacities that are particularly important for optimal performance? https://www.mooresvillesepticsystems.com/
